  In some countries, the widespread use of the Internet has given people more freedom to work or study at home, instead of travelling to work or college. Do the advantages outweigh disadvantages?

  The advent of Internet has brought considerable change to a great number of aspects in our life, among which the flexible working and study at home is a huge improvement we cannot lose sight of.

  The first most obvious benefit is teleworking and studying at home makes it not necessary to spend substantial commuting time. With a click of mouse or a gentle touch on the computer screen, students can have easy access to various school courses and have academic discussion with their classmates and teachers. In the workplace, colleagues can have videoconferencing to brainstorms ideas for different tasks and negotiate with business partners without any geographical barriers. Otherwise, students had to go to school everyday and clerical workers had to commute from one place to another to complete their daily work.

  Working and studying at home can also bring people more possibility to achieve work and family balance in the fast-paced workplace. The office-based work requires employees to spend a long time in their companies and makes it difficult to pay enough attention to their family issues, leading to a low work satisfaction and even a higher turnover of staff. This is especially true for the female employees, who have to work arduously for their jobs on the one hand, and have to work around families on the other hand.

  Of course, there are some shortcomings for working and studying at home. For the employers and teachers, they can hardly overlook or supervise their subordinates and students, and the effectiveness of work and study is based on ones’ consciousness and initiative. Another disadvantage is the formation of teamwork and a sense of belonging to groups, because students and workmates study and work separately but not share ideas simultaneously in the same place.

  To conclude, teleworking and study from home free people and is beneficial to family-work balance even though there are some noticeable disadvantages.
