If people go to live in another country, they should follow the local customs and traditions. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Introduction
Gone are the days when transatlantic voyages were an expedition beyond reach for the average person; nowadays, relocation to a new country has pervaded for a variety of reasons, ranging from family reunion and business opportunity to superior healthcare and refuge seeking. As one settles in a far-off country, societal demands on one’s compliance with indigenous unwritten law of living style and tradition are no less taxing.

Those who originate from civilizations where boisterous and joyful communal meals are the norm may find themselves feel lost and disoriented when moving to a Western country where individualism reigns supreme. Ditto, in Nepal, Sri Lanka and India, innocuous use of the left hand for eating or picking up objects may be deemed insulting. No wonder that Canadian citizenship test comprises questions about Canada’s history, geography and even festive symbols, all of which are intertwined with one’s sense of community in the long run.

Furthermore, having an affinity for an offshore national sport appears to be the last thing on the minds of desperate exiles plainly seeking for a livelihood on an unfamiliar land. Finally, uniformity in living style brought about by technological development and globalization seems to make conformance to local tradition redundant, as local posterities fail to defend their primogenitors’ way of life in the first place.
