Sleep, who need it?

As any parents know, the first months of infants means sleeplessness. Jerome Siegel, university of California, Los Angeles, proposed that it is easy for us to make a comparison to orcas, the killer whales, which even do not sleep at all after giving birth to the youngsters.

According to Siegel, it has been accepted that sleep keeps brain functioning. But, it is questionable that orcas who suffered from great sleep deprivation carried the biggest size of brain in the world.

Some animal die without adequate sleep, and experiment shows that sleep deprivation may cause animal die quicker than food deprivation.

Sleep is not the same for all creatures. Dolphins sleep with only one brain hemisphere in slow-wave sleep at a time, thus maintaining enough consciousness to breathe and to watch for possible predators and other threats. Earlier sleep stages can occur simultaneously in both hemispheres.  In captivity, dolphins seemingly enter a fully asleep state where both eyes are closed and there is no response to mild external stimuli.

Neuroscientist Clifford Saper, the, located a small area of the brain called ventrolateral preoptic nucleus which may sent signals to other areas of the brain during sleep.

Verner Bingmana professor of Bowling Green State University, Ohio, indicates that experiments carried out may provide us ways of less sleep without losing efficiency.

Bingman and the doctoral students XXobserved that the Swanson’s thrushes fell into the phase of drowsiness during morning to midday. They usually take micro naps 50 times an hour, each lasting 10 to 20 seconds.
