Content Review A The study of yawning is anything but boring. It boasts a rich history of theories that go back to antiquity, but thus far the there is no conclusive idea as to why people yawn. And we’ve already known that yawning can be contagious. When you see someone yawn, it is very likely that you’ll yawn, too. Many theories have been made to explain this phenomenon. Scientific researches have been carried out in order to solve this mystery. One research in Albany university focuses on the explanation of yawning while the other two in Leeds university and London university study the contagious yawning.
B There is theory that people yawn when they feel stressed to let in more oxygen as athlete usually yawn before the event. But the experiment in Albany university shows that people do not yawn because they need oxygen. The conclusion is made from the fact that the rise and fall of oxygen and carbon dioxide do not lead to extra yawning. And not unlike computer, human brain performs better when cool. It helps provide blood flow in one’s body. The researchers asked one group of students to put a wet towel on their forehead and it basically eliminates yawning.
C Animals yawn when then see their own kind yawn except chimpanzee and a certain kind of monkey. But only 40 to 60 percent of people are susceptible to contagious yawning. Researchers in Leeds university find that when contagious yawning occurs, the same part of brain that is related to empathy of sympathy is active.
D An experiment in Leeds university is carried that two group of students, one of them the students majored in psychology, who are considered to have higher level of empathy, while the other engineering students, who are believed to be more interested in things and objects. Both group sit with someone who is asked to yawn quite frequently. And the psychology students yawn much more than engineering students. But women, who are more sympathetic than men according to our understanding, didn’t show extra yawning compared to men.
E A research carried out in London university may add light to the study. Children with autism are unable to form emotional bond with the people they meet. And the researchers asked a group of children with autism to watch a video tape showing someone yawns. And a group of children without autism as a controlled group. The result shows that the autism children are less susceptible to contagious yawning.
F How yawning evolves such a thing that people will do spontaneously. One theory has it that yawning increase alert in the dangerous situation. And it serves as a bond between early humans. When someone yawns, it means “I should rest for a while, you stay awake for now” Thus it become a way to communicate among tribes and form an evolutionary advantage.

重點話題Sample Answer |
Describe someone who is knowledgeable. You should say: Who this person is How you know this person What kinds of things he knows How you think of this person.
The knowledgeable man I am going to tell you about is Leonardo Da Vinci. He was one of the three most outstanding and well known artists during the Renaissance. I have known about him since I was a little child at secondary school. One Chinese textbook had a long article on his artistic achievements and his status in history. But at that time I thought he was nothing more than a great artist. Then I came across his biography at the library and began to realize what a knowledgeable person he was.
His fields of interests involved sculpture, music, maths, astronomy and history. He made his own contribution to all these areas. He seems to be a genius from another universe, leaving us everyday people far behind. I admire his ingenuity and I think he is really talented. My knowledge is as trivial as ashes compared to his. |
